trends – painting over

Happy Monday all!

I see an art trend happening. I’ve spotted several artists using this technique – which I’ve called “painting over” (if you know the actual name let me know) – where they take an existing piece of art – usually a photograph or another painting – and they create something new on it; big colourful brush strokes, smeared faces, paint drippings, etc.

This trend could be some type of refurbished art technique, no? (not that there’s anything wrong with the original piece) – if you think of it this is happening everywhere right now, from fashion (altered vintage items) to interior design (scandinavian reclaimed wood).

I am personally enjoying this trend for sure – what about you? Do you like this type of art? What’s your stance?

i’ve been thinking of painting over some of my own pieces, but I never considered doing it to someone else’s work. Interesting thought; I wonder where the copyright aspect comes into play though.

Good question Dave, I wonder if they perhaps do it as a collaboration or maybe the prints/photos used have a different license.
