Mixology: How To Make a Lavender French 75

How to make a Lavender French 75

This cocktail is one of those amazing drinks that as soon as you taste it, it instantly transports you to a blissful place; a place full of memories, intoxicated with the smell of fresh meadows and drenched with golden sunlight. Sounds like a rad place if you ask me.

Today I’ll give you a few tips on how to make a Lavender French 75. This classic cocktail has been around for a long time – since 1915 to be exact. Like a cool grandfather that totally went hipster, the French 75 has made quite the comeback.

The original recipe uses lemon and other spirits, nothing too complicated. Adding a bit of lavender-infused simple syrup takes this dapper cocktail to a whole ‘notha level. So let’s skip the chatter and let’s hit the bar!

Serves 1

Ingredients

– A handful of fresh lavender
– 1/2 cup of sugar
– 1 cup of water
– Champagne or sparkling wine
– 2 oz of Gin
– 1/2 oz of freshly squeeze lemon juice

Make it

1: To make the lavender simple syrup – place the cup of water and sugar on a pot and heat up until the sugar is completely dissolved. Once the mix is simmering, turn off the heat and add 2 tablespoons of fresh lavender flowers or about 3 sprigs. Let it cool down completely and place it in the fridge.

2: Pour 1/2 a tablespoon (more if you like it sweeter) of the lavender syrup in your champagne flute.

3: In a shaker, add some ice, the lemon juice, and the gin. Shake it like a polaroid picture and slowly strain into the flute, you want to see a little bit of the violet-hued syrup at the bottom. Top it up with champagne. Garnish with a lemon twist (you can squeeze the peel over the glass to add extra zest!) and voila!

So easy and oh so rewarding. Have one of these bubbly bad boys while basking in the sun and I swear you’ll hear Paul Newman whisper in your ear “let’s have a kiki”.
